The Network of Research Sites is designed to ensure ready-to-activate, well-coordinated research infrastructure for responding to cross-border health threats. Bringing together basic, preclinical, and clinical research, this network will support high-quality, multi-country trials that smoothly transition into public health interventions during emergencies. By identifying existing gaps and needs, the initiative will lay the groundwork for a structured and sustainable network that can be rapidly mobilized in times of crisis.
At the core of this effort is the development of a governance structure, operational framework, and funding mechanisms to sustain and expand research capacity across Europe. Within BE READY PLUS national contact points will be established, tasked with identifying and coordinating study sites, ensuring that even countries not currently involved in multinational trials can participate. A key focus will be on maintaining “ever-warm” networks — a system that balances ongoing research with emergency preparedness—by integrating research activities that also benefit non-pandemic contexts, such as chronic disease studies. This initiative will engage with industry and key stakeholders to explore long-term funding strategies, reinforcing Europe’s ability to swiftly scale up research efforts in response to future health threats.
